introduction 5 welcome! we hope you enjoy your complete dvd home cinema system. this seven-piece, 175-watt system creates dynamic sound quality and realism found only in cinemas. features of the dvd home cinema system include: surround sound options night mode: reduces the range between high and low vol- umes during disc playback. parental controls: sets a rating level so your children can- not watch a dvd that has a rating higher than the level you set. sleep timer: turns the dvd receiver to standby mode (off) at a preset time. package contents remote control and two (2) aa batteries audio and video (composite) cables five speakers, including speaker wires subwoofer, including connection cable and power cable am loop antenna and fm wire antenna owner s manual, quick-use guide and product registra- tion materials environmental information all unnecessary packaging has been omitted. we have tried to make the packaging easy to separate into three materials: cardboard (box), polystyrene foam (buffer) and polyethylene (bags, protective foam sheet). your system consists of materials which can be recycled and reused if disassembled by a specialized company. please observe the local regulations regarding the disposal of packag- ing materials, exhausted batteries and old equipment. playable discs this dvd home cinema system will play: digital video discs (dvds) video compact discs (vcds) or super video cds all finalized audio cds mp3 files on compact disc recordable (cd-r) or compact disc rewritable (cd-rw). region codes dvds must be labeled for all regions or for region 1 in order to play on the dvd receiver of this home cinema system. you cannot play discs that are labeled for other regions. the region code for the dvd receiver is 1 (one). look for the correct region symbol on your dvds. the number inside the globe refers to a region of the world. region 1 represents the united states of america, canada, upper regions of north america, bermuda, the u.s. virgin islands, and small regions near australia. color systems different color systems are available throughout the world. dvd makers record dvds in a certain color system. the color system of the dvd may appear on the dvd or its case. the most common color systems are ntsc, pal, and secam. ntsc is used primarily in the united states and north america. this dvd receiver is compatible with both ntsc and pal. follow the steps on page 26 to set the dvd receiver to ntsc or pal. choose a setting that matches the color sys- tem of your tv and your dvds. maintenance and cleaning clean discs with a cleaning cloth, wiping from the center to the edge in a straight line. do not wipe the disc in a circular motion. do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercial- ly-available cleaners, or anti-static spray intended for ana- log discs. if the dvd receiver cannot read discs correctly, use an accessory cleaning cd/dvd to clean the lens. other cleaning methods may destroy the lens. always keep the tray closed to avoid dust on the lens. the lens may cloud over if you suddenly move the dvd receiver from cold to warm room conditions. if lens clouding occurs, you may not be able to play a disc. leave the power on for about one hour with no disc in the unit until playback is possible. do not expose the receiver, batteries, or discs to humidi- ty, rain, sand, or excessive heat (from devices or direct sunlight). always keep the disc tray closed to avoid get- ting dust on the lens. if you are having trouble playing a certain disc, remove the disc and try a different one. improperly formatted discs will not play on this dvd receiver. helpful hint recordable rewritable

first time setup 9 where do you start? 1 disconnect all equipment from power. connect equipment to power only after you have finished hooking up everything. do not change connections with equipment connected to a power outlet. 2 put the batteries in the remote control and connect the am and fm antennas as detailed below. 3 connect the dvd receiver to a television using one of the options detailed in your separate quick-use guide (or on pages 10-12). you need only one video connection between the dvd receiver and the tv. use composite video (good picture quality), s-video (better picture), or component video (best picture). use the best connection available with your tv. set the tv to the correct video in channel. such channels may be called aux(iliary) in, audio/video (a/v) in, ext1, s- video, etc. these channels are often near channel 00 on your tv. or, your tv remote control may have a button or switch that chooses different video modes. with some tvs, you use the tv s menu to select a video mode. see your tv manual for details. 4 connect the speakers and subwoofer to the dvd receiver as detailed in your quick-use guide (or on page 13). battery installation 1 remove the battery compartment lid by pressing in the tab, then lifting off the lid. 2 place the batteries in the battery compartment, matching the +/- markings on the batteries to the +/- markings inside the remote. 3 replace the battery compartment lid. antenna connections 1 connect the supplied am loop antenna to the am jack on the rear of the dvd receiver. reposition the loop antenna to receive the clearest sound for area stations. attach the antenna to the base stand if desired. 2 connect the supplied fm antenna to the fm jack on the rear of the dvd receiver. extend and adjust the antenna until the clearest station signal is received. for better fm reception, use a 75 ohm coaxial cable (not supplied) to connect the dvd receiver to an outdoor fm antenna as shown. am fm (75 ?) outdoor fm antenna (not supplied) or put the claw into the slot. 75  rear of tv 75  75  note: if your tv only has a single antenna in(put) jack, you will need an accessory rf modulator to view the dvd playback on your tv. see your electronics retailer or contact magnavox for details on rf modulator avail- ability. to prevent unwanted noise, keep the antenna as far away as possible from the tv, vcr, or any other radiation source. helpful hint

mute disc aux tv/av tuner 1 6 2 4 3 5 9 8 7 0 menu menu disc system ok surround sound night resume repeat repeat sleep dim subw center rear tv vol a-b magnavox 36 surround sound options for proper surround sound, you must connect the speakers correctly and select the right sound source mode. see page 13 and your separate quick- use guide for details. the center and surround speakers operate only when the dvd home cinema system is set to surround sound mode. the source you are playing (dvds, tuner, etc.) must be recorded or broadcast in dolby digital, dts, or dolby pro logic surround sound. stereo broadcasts or recordings will produce some surround sound effects when played in a surround mode. however, monaural (mono) sources will not produce any sound from the surround speakers. selecting surround sound 1 press surround repeatedly to select a surround sound or stereo mode. the availability of the various surround sound modes depends on the number of speakers connected and the sound information available on the disc, etc. surround sound options are: dolby digital surround - also referred to as ac-3, dolby 5.1, or mpeg multichannel - delivers a realistic, dynamic sound similar to theater and cinema. many dvds are recorded in dolby digital surround. all five speakers (front left, front right, center, surround left, and surround right) and the subwoofer of the dvd home cinema system must be connected to the dvd receiver. dts (digital theater systems) surround - a cinema sur- round sound format that offers superior digital audio perfor- mance. dts offers more clarity and definition, especially for high- er tones. the better sound quality is a result of the limited sound compression (3:1 instead of 11:1 for dolby digital) and 20-bit res- olution. dolby pro logic surround - a specially encoded two-channel analog format that produces sound through four speakers (front left, center, front right, and a single/monaural surround) when using a dolby pro logic decoder. dolby pro logic surround is compatible with two-channel (right and left) stereos, but you will have sound only from two channels (the left and right). matrix - a new surround system that delivers four-channel sur- round sound (front left, front right, surround left, and surround right). vss (virtual surround sound) - the prologic, mpeg, or dolby digital surround sound is processed by a virtualizer dsp, adding surround sound when using only the front (left/right) speakers. stereo - all sound is reproduced and played through the front left/right speakers. this enables standard stereo reproduction. viewing area rear speaker (left surround) rear speaker (right surround) front speaker (left) front speaker (right) center speaker above tv subwoofer 1

helpful hints 39 warning! under no circumstances should you try to repair the system yourself, as this will invalidate the warranty. do not open the system as there is a risk of electric shock. if you are having problems with your product, check this list of problems and possible solutions before requesting service. you may be able to solve the problem yourself. no power press standby-on y on the front of the dvd receiver to turn on the power. make sure you connected the dvd receiver s power cord to an ac power outlet. make sure the ac outlet has power by trying another appliance in the same outlet. no picture make sure the tv power is on. check the video cables. make sure the cable(s) are fastened securely to the dvd receiver and tv. set your tv to the correct video in channel. these channels are usually near channel 00. or, you may have a button on the tv remote control that selects an auxiliary or a/v in channel. see your tv owner s manual for details. or, go to your low- est tv channel and change channels down until you see the dvd screen on the tv. you only need one video connection between the dvd receiver and the tv. adjust video out if you used s-video or component video. details are on page 28. press the correct source button (tv/av, disc, tuner, or aux) to choose what you want to watch. distorted picture check the disc for fingerprints. clean the disc with a soft cloth, wiping from the center to the edge in a straight line. sometimes a small amount of picture distortion may appear. this is not a malfunction. the picture is distorted, the picture rolls, or the picture is only black and white. tvs have a color system standard, usually ntsc in the united states. if the disc s or dvd receiver s color system is different than your tv s color system, the picture may be distorted or colorless. adjust the tv system setting at the dvd receiver. details are on page 26. check the video out setting. details are on page 28. if you connected the dvd receiver to a tv using s-video cable (as described on page 12), set video out to s-video. if you connected the dvd receiver to a tv using component video cable (red, green, and blue as described on page 11), set video out to pr pb y. the sound is distorted or there is no sound. make sure you did not connect any cables from the dvd receiver to a stereo s phono in jack. make sure you did not connect the digital out - coaxial or optical jack on the dvd receiver to an analog jack on the stereo. (analog audio jacks are usually labeled as such and are usually red and white.) check the speaker connections. make sure cables are connected firmly to all equipment. details are on page 13. choose the correct audio/video in or auxiliary channel at your tv. see your tv s manual for details. or, change channels at the tv until you hear sound from the disc that is in the dvd receiver or until you see the dvd screen on your tv. choose a different audio setting. details are on pages 18, 29, and 34. check the audio setting of a dvd in the dvd disc menu, if available, and adjust as necessary. choose the correct sound source at the dvd receiver. press tv/av, disc, tuner, or aux on the dvd receiver s remote control to choose the equipment that you want to hear through the dvd receiver. check the surround sound setting. make sure it is compatible/available with the current disc. details are on page 35. adjust the volume. details are on page 34. replace the speaker cables. check the speaker settings. details are on page 30. sound is mute during slow motion, searching, or paused disc playback. press play/pause bk to resume normal playback and restore the sound. disc will not play. make sure the disc label is facing up. if you are playing a two-sided disc, make sure the label of the side you want to play is facing up when you place the disc in the dvd receiver s disc tray. details are on page 15. check the parental controls. details are on pages 32-33. check the region code of the dvd. the dvd must be coded for all regions or region 1 in order to play on this dvd receiver. details are on page 5. see if the disc is defective by trying another disc. make sure the disc is not scratched or warped. carefully clean the disc. check the color system of the dvd. it must be recorded in ntsc or pal. adjust the tv system setting at the dvd receiver appropriately. details are on page 26. press system menu to remove the system menu. then try playing the disc again. moisture may have condensed inside the dvd receiver. remove the disc and leave the dvd receiver power on for about an hour before trying to play discs again. moisture may condense inside the dvd receiver if you move it suddenly from a warm place to a cold environment, or vice versa.
40 helpful hints (cont?) an audio cd will not play. some audio cds available on the market are copy protected. these discs will not play on this dvd receiver. see your retail- er for options regarding non-protected audio cds. the dvd receiver does not respond to the remote control. aim the remote control directly at the remote sensor on the front of the dvd receiver, not your tv. details are on page 7 . remove any obstacles between the dvd receiver and the remote. move closer to the dvd receiver and try again. inspect or replace the batteries in the remote control. details are on page 9 . use the source buttons (tv/av, disc, tuner, aux) to place the remote in the right mode. for example, when using the remote to start disc playback, press disc first. you cannot activate some features, such as angles, subtitles, or multi-language audio. the feature may not be available on the disc. check the disc case to see if the disc has the feature. if the disc does not have the feature, the dvd receiver cannot create the feature. this is not a malfunction of the dvd receiver. the dvd receiver does not work. disconnect the power cord from the power outlet for a few minutes. reconnect the power cord and try to operate the dvd receiver again as usual. there is no sound from the center or rear/surround speakers. press center +/- or rear+/- on the remote control to adjust the volume level. make sure the center and rear/surround speakers are connected correctly. details are on page 13. choose a correct surround sound setting. surround sound must be available on the current disc or broadcast. details are on page 35. radio broadcasts are noisy or have considerable static. tune to the correct frequency. details are on page 36. connect the antennas. details are on page 9. route cable tv/rf/ac-3 and digital cables away from the antennas and speaker wires. fully extend the fm wire antenna and position it for the best reception. connect an outdoor fm or am antenna. turn off other equipment that is near the dvd receiver. it may be causing interference. move other equipment away from the dvd receiver. move the dvd receiver s antennas away from the other equipment. the display panel is dark. press dim repeatedly until you can see the information on the display panel. you hear a low hum or buzz sound. place the dvd receiver as far as possible from electric devices that may cause interference. bass response is low. check the polarity (+/- wires and jacks) of all the speakers.

42 glossary analog: sound that has not been turned into numbers. analog sound varies, while digital sound has specific numerical values. analog sound is available when you use the red and white audio jacks on your equipment. these jacks send audio through two channels, the left and right. audio out jacks: jacks on the back of the dvd receiver that send audio to another system (tv, stereo, etc.). bit rate: the amount of data used to hold a given length of music; mea- sured in kilobits per seconds, or kbps. or, the speed at which you record. generally, the higher the bit rate, or the higher the recording speed, the better the sound quality. however, higher bit rates use more space on a disc. for example, an mp3 music file recorded at 32 kbps will record slowly, use the least disc space, and have the poorest sound quality. but, an mp3 music file recorded at 96 kbps will record quicker, use more disc space, and have significantly better sound quality. cd : compact disc (audio). coaxial jack: sends digital audio to a stereo, allowing you to adjust the volume at the stereo. the stereo must have a coaxial in jack. this connec- tion provides the 5.1 channel surround sound as heard in movie theaters. component video out jacks : jacks on the back of the dvd receiver that send high-quality video to a tv that has component video in jacks. digital: sound that has been converted into numerical values. digital sound is available when you use the digital audio out coaxial or optical jacks. these jacks send audio through multiple channels, instead of just two channels as analog does. dolby digital: a surround sound system that provides 5.1 channel sound as used in movie theaters. dts: digital theater systems. this is a surround sound system, but it is different from dolby digital. the formats were developed by different companies. dvd : digital video disc. letterbox: a tv aspect ratio setting (4:3). displays the video in full- width, with black bars at the top and bottom of the tv screen. this format is similar to seeing a movie in a theater. if the disc does not include a let- terbox format , selecting letterbox may have no effect. (for example, some dvds are two-sided, with one side playing in letterbox and the other side playing in a normal format.) optical jack: converts electrical signals into optical signals before sending the audio to the stereo. optical audio is not prone to external electrical influences and has less noise, which reduces adverse effects on external equipment. be sure to keep the protective cap on the jack when the jack is not in use. this keeps dust out of the jack. pan & scan: a tv aspect ratio setting (4:3). displays the video with full- height picture, with one or both sides of the picture trimmed. some movie companies refer to this as reformatting the picture to fit your tv screen. pr pb y: see component video out jacks . remote control: the unit that came with your dvd receiver and allows you to operate your dvd receiver from a distance. s-video: produces a clear picture by sending separate signals for the luminance and the color. you can use s-video only if your tv has an s- video in jack. video out jack: jack on the back of the dvd receiver that sends video to a tv. widescreen: a tv aspect ratio setting (16:9). displays the video appro- priately when you connect the dvd receiver to a widescreen tv.
